‘THE REALLY FREE SCHOOL’ Sat. 15th Oct. 2011

Our next Free School event will be all day Sat. 15th October 2011, followed by evening entertainment.

Venue: CADS (Creative Arts Development Space) 7 Smithfield, Shalesmoor, St. Vincents Quarter, Sheffield S3 7AR. (It’s in the West Bar area of Sheffield, about 5 minutes from the city centre).

WHAT’S THIS ALL ABOUT?

You might have noticed that our everyday lives involve being bombarded from all angles by people whose primary desire in life is to make money. This can have one or two downsides: the creation of a culture in which happiness and well-being are measured in pounds and pence, the systematic sacrifice of planet earth in the name of business, and the life of a person coming to be quantified in terms of their financial worth instead of their intrinsic value as a thinking, breathing human being.

On 15th October 2011, people in Sheffield will be coming together to resist the tide of consumer capitalism, exploitation and crisis, creating a space for the free sharing of skills, ideas and knowledge. Come along to the Sheffield free school – maybe even to share a skill of your own.

The free school is being organised by members of the Sheffield Social Centre project, which aims to establish a permanent space for non-hierarchical, anti-capitalist and non-discriminatory activity in Sheffield.

Plans for a permanent Sheffield Social Centre

Sheffield Social Centre group is currently in the process of registering as a co-operative and joining the Radical Routes network. Following this it will be seeking funding and premises for a permanent space in the city, run on anti-capitalist, non-hierarchical, non-discriminatory principles.

Art Priorities 2011-12: Trevor Tomlin

The folowing community groups and events will form the basis of my art activity for October 2011-December 2012.

My activity will focus on skill sharing, collaboration and inclusiveness and involve facilitating participative workshops, open to any adult, linked to specific tasks e.g. making lanterns, producing leaflets, posters & decor for comunity events.

Work will include photography, graphic design, publishing, print-making, painting, drawing, sculpture and performance.

CALL FOR ARTISTS! Allotment Soup 2011: Sunday 23/10/11

ALLOTMENT SOUP is an annual creative and artistic harvest celebration that takes place at a different Sheffield allotment site each year. The aim of the event is to celebrate food growing and allotment culture. Allotment Soup is a Grow Sheffield event.

This year’s Allotment Soup event will be held at the LEAF community allotment in Norwood on Sunday 23rd October. Allotment holders are invited to open up their plot to host an installation, artwork or event as part of Allotment Soup. Artists, performers, poets etc are encouraged to respond to the particular allotment in which they are working by creating new, original work in response to the site, theme and the season.

We will be holding two open days at the allotments for artists and other interested parties to come along and visit and explore the site, meet the growers and think about potential ideas and sites for work. These days are: Saturday 10th and Wednesday 14th September 12pm-4pm.

If you are interested in attending, exhibiting or collaborating please email Ruthie (ruthie_ford@hotmail.com) or Diane (diane@leafsheffield.org.uk) with your NAME, NUMBER AND EMAIL ADDRESS. Please also email if you have any questions or cannot make the open days but would still like to visit the site. We will be sending out more information to those who have expressed an interest on Tuesday 6th September.

Artists Statement: Trevor Tomlin

“Earth, Air, Fire, Water”

In 2011, I'm linking all my exhibited art work with the theme of “Earth, Air, Fire & Water” which I can take quite metaphorically as well as literally, at times.

The work in this particular exhibition consists of photographs and printmaking but the project to date has also included sculpture and painting.

The set of four lino prints depicts jungle animals (linked to part of the recent exhibition at Peace In The Park) and lifeforms I found at the Sheffield TAA (Temporary Autonomous Arts) event earlier this year.

The set of four digital photographs are multiple layer constructs, made with Open Source Software at Access Space and are derived mainly from scenes in Ecclesall Woods and Rivelin Valley.

Tree Planting Celebration this Friday 25th March @ Ponderosa

Peace Tree for The Ponderosa

A new ‘Peace Tree’ will be planted on The Ponderosa to celebrate Peace in the Park and launch preparations for the 2011 festival. The community tree planting will take place at 1pm on Friday 25th March at the Bellefield Street entrance of The Ponderosa.

Peace in the Park is Sheffield’s largest free community music & arts festival. The festival promotes peace and understanding by bringing together communities through artistic, musical and vocal expression. This year’s festival takes place on Saturday 4th June at The Ponderosa.

“The new Peace Tree is a Weeping Beech. This tree is a symbol of the festival because there is one at the Hunters Bar entrance to Endcliffe Park where the festival was held for many years. Now The Ponderosa has become the new home of Peace in the Park which has been held there for 4 years and the Peace Tree will be a beautiful way to celebrate this.” said a spokesperson for the festival.

Volunteers involved in organising Peace in the Park contacted Trees & Woodlands at Sheffield City Council who have been planting trees across the city to help renew Sheffield’s urban forest.

“I was delighted to hear from Peace in the Park. It is a fantastic festival and planting a tree on The Ponderosa is a great way to celebrate their achievement. A Weeping Beech will grow for over 200 hundred years and will contribute to our work to renew Sheffield’s urban forests.” said Ed Thatcher, Community Forester.
